Do I need to switch the URL of my company to one of the new domain extensions?
Some time back, Internet Corporation for assigned names and numbers has opened more than 1000 generic top level domains (gTLDs) outside of the regular .COM, .NET, .ORG, and .BIZ tlds.
The new gTLDs happen to be like .florist, .gallery, .repair, .homes, .technology and many more tlds which are specific to certain services or search terms
This means a new small business like beachhomes in brazil could switch from its current url beachhomes.com to a more simpler one like beach.homes.
If you get thoughts or questions in mind like is it necessary for any business to switch from a .com or .net extension to one that may describe its product or service in a better way?
Then the answer is, Not necessarily, a .com will be dominant at all times. Unlike English words like.company or.cool, it operates across all languages and boundaries. .com is a beautiful wide and generic canvas for branding reasons.
Today Microsoft is micosoft, ebay is ebay and imagine if they are changed to say microsoft.tech or say microsoft.technology this will to certain extent lessen their authority if relaunched on new gTLDs.
These new gTLDs make sense when you do not have a short, your business specific domain name in regular .com or .net or .org.
For example say, you have a heavy four word.com like( lawofficesofnewsouthwales.com) or so.
In such cases you can change the URL to say some short .legal domain name extension to make it simpler.
Sometimes you might feel the urge to lock these new gTLDs so as to prevent your competitors from using it.
But, it is not necessary leaving aside few cases like (Disneyland did not ignore disney.land); it would rather be a waste of money.
For example I don’t see any benefit in registering a TATA.bike, TATA.plumbing, TATA.legal etc and similar other irrelevant domains and then pointing them TATA’s main site.
This kind of domain forwarding can only makes sense when it helps people find you online, and not as sheer protective measure.
Secondly looking at the positive side these new extensions can help you in your digital marketing and promotion efforts say you are offering a car as a prize, you can set it up like WinA.car.
Which allows one to set up a separate landing page without disrupting the main page of your company’s website.
In such way, your existing URL acts like your company’s online front door and one can use these ngTLDs to relocate, open a new additional location, and add a side entry without disturbing your main URL.
