Belgians are increasingly more aware of security issues online, including knowledge of various domain names and extensions, according to a survey by InSites Consulting for the domain registrar DNS Belgium. It found that sites with a .be extension are the most trusted by Belgians.
Two-thirds of those surveyed said they use the internet everyday, up 10 percent from the end of 2017. Nearly half (47%) said they like to be always online, an increase of 13 percent points in the past year.
Growing internet usage comes with a growing awareness of security risks. Half of respondents said they think about security when online and a quarter said they know how to protect themselves on the internet.
Nearly two-thirds (64%) said they don't visit sites that appear unreliable. The most important signs to trust a site are an encrypted connection (https:), the domain name extension and the presence of an official logo.
Only around 5 percent of Belgians have ever registered their own domain name. However, 50 percent know what a domain name is and what it does. The extensions .be and .com remain the most popular and trusted. While .com is slightly more popular, .be is the most trusted and easiest to remember, the survey found.
