In a crackdown on spammers, Godaddy has shut down over 15,000 subdomains as they were used to sell fake products without the knowledge of the domain names, rightful owners.
According to the security researcher, the operation involved sending spam emails in bulk and getting the user to click on those subdomains that sold fake products.
It is explained that millions of users could have been tricked by the scammers.
Since users landed on websites that appeared to be subdomains of legitimate domains, they were conned to believe they were buying a genuine product.
All these subdomains featured fake celebrity endorsements on landing pages.
